Russian politician seeks to end death penalty moratorium amidst Ukraine conflict
ARussian politician has announced his intention to submit a request to the Constitutional Court to end the moratorium on the death penalty. A State Duma deputy believes the death penalty in Russia should be reinstated for the period of the conflict in Ukraine.
It's important to note that many reports from Russian media or officials can be elements of propaganda, playing a role in the informational war led by the Russian Federation.
State Duma Deputy Michaił Szeremet of the United Russia party mentioned his plans to seek the Constitutional Court’s permission to resume the death penalty as reported by "Kommiersant".
- I intend to refresh my legislative proposal developed several years ago and submit it to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation to obtain legal grounds for ending the moratorium on the death penalty in our country - Michaił Szeremet was quoted by the state Russian agency RIA Novosti.
Szeremet explains that the death penalty should be applicable to terrorists and their collaborators, as well as to pedophiles and drug traffickers. He stressed that this measure should be temporary, only during the "military operation" in Ukraine.
Support from Putin's circle
Russia has maintained a moratorium on the death penalty since the 1990s - according to "The Moscow Times". The push for reinstating the death penalty emerged within Vladimir Putin's circle after a terrorist attack in a concert hall at Crocus City Hall, close to Moscow. - There are now many questions regarding the death penalty. (...) This issue will certainly be explored thoroughly, professionally, and in depth. A decision will be made that reflects the sentiments and expectations of our society - stated the leader of the United Russia faction, Władimir Wasiliew, on Saturday.
The Speaker of the Parliament, Wiaczesław Wołodin, believes that a decision from the Constitutional Court would suffice to potentially end the moratorium - "Kommiersant" reports.
