Living conditions are dismal for many ordinary people in North Korea, which has been run by an authoritarian, communist regime since 1948. Around 70% of the population do not have enough to eat and many rely on global food aid. In his New Year's speech, Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un acknowledged food shortages in the country and pledged his intention to solve the problem – a plan that flies in the face of his previous spending habits.
Over the years, Kim Jong-un has spent huge amounts of money on a weapons programme and many vanity projects, aimed more at shoring up support or showing off than meeting his people’s needs.
