Explosion and huge fire erupts in UK town - updates as thick black smoke fills sky
Emergency crews were called shortly before 4pm to reports of a fire on Saxon Way. Dramatic footage shared on social media shows thick black smoke filling the skyline.
In a video shot from a motorway overpass, a mushroom-like cloud of smoke is seen shooting up in the air.
A picture taken near the Humber Bridge also shows a red inferno raging in the distance.
It is understood the fire started at a factory to the west of the city.
Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue have been deployed to the scene.
The emergency services have urged people to keep their windows and doors closed.
Some residential properties have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, others reported hearing "explosive bangs", Hull Live reports.
One resident said: "I had just made a cup of tea while working from home when I heard a ferocious bang!
"I had no idea what it was an then saw there was a thick cloud of smoke across the city. This is frightening - stay safe everyone."
Another added: "I saw it when it just started and then suddenly heard a big bang."
Humberside Fire and Rescue has also urged motorists to avoid Priory Way to the A63 due to a "large amount of smoke".
She tweeted: "Huge fire on Clive Sullivan Hull. Emergency services on scene.
"Hope everyone safe. Take care."
Bus routes in the area are being diverted to alternative stations, while some shops have also been told to shut.
At this stage there are no reports of any injuries.
Emma Hardy, Labour MP for Hull West and Hessel, has urged her constituents to stay safe.
She tweeted: "I am hearing reports of a fire at the Thompsons plastics factory in Hessle. Please stay safe whilst the emergency services do everything they can to deal with this awful incident."
Ms Hardy also informed residents to expect some power outages this evening.
In a statement, Humberside Police said: "Officers are currently in attendance at an incident on Saxon Way, Hessle supporting the fire service following reports of a fire at 3:40pm today (Wednesday 24 November).
"We ask that members of the public avoid the area were possible whilst the incident is brought to a safe resolution."
Shortly after 4.45pm, Humberside Fire and Rescue tweeted: "We're currently in attendance at an incident in the Hessle area.
"We advise local residents to close windows and doors.
"Please avoid the Priory Way to A63 area and be mindful there is a large amount of smoke in the area and surrounding roads."
