Former Vice Minister of Public Security sentenced to death in China for taking bribes

a Chinese court on Friday sentenced former Vice Minister of Public Security Sun Lijun to death for taking bribes, a sentence that will be suspended for two years, just a day after the same conviction was handed down against a former justice minister for corruption.

Sun has also been deprived of his political rights and all his properties have been confiscated as part of the ruling, which provides that, once the two-year suspension period is over, the sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment, without the possibility of bail, as reported by the Chinese newspaper 'Global Times'.

The court has also sentenced Sun to eight years in prison for manipulating the stock market and five years for illegal possession of weapons, although these sentences would be served in parallel in the event that the sentence is finally commuted and he spends the rest of his life in prison.

The same court on Thursday sentenced former Justice Minister Fu Zhenghua to death for prevarication and bribery, a sentence that has also been suspended for a period of two years. Fu was found guilty of accepting bribes worth 117 million yuan (about 16.7 million euros) and of taking advantage of his position for personal gain.
